Club Member Greg MacNaull is the contact for The Great Race in the Sussex area and planning an event when the vehicles will be in the Sussex area. He sent me the note below with details:
*Update* The vehicles ( 120 in total ) will pass through Sussex Corner and Sussex late in the afternoon
on Friday, June 29.***
A host of vintage cars will pass through the province this summer for a race starting in the U.S. and ending in N.S.
The 2018 Hemmings Motor News Great Race, a race featuring vintage cars dating back to 1916, will pass through Saint John, Moncton, Sussex and Sussex Corner.
The nine-day trip starts in Buffalo, N.Y. on June 23 and will end in Halifax, N.S. on July 1.
Racers from around the globe will meet in Buffalo and begin their 2,300 mile journey. A $50,000 USD prize is up for grabs for the team who arrives at the finish line with the best accuracy. Teams include racers from Japan, England, Germany, Canada and the U.S.
Though it’s called a race, the competition is not about speed but more about being accurate. “It’s about accuracy,” said race director Jeff Stumb.“You’re obviously competing against other people but you’re really competing against the clock,” he told the Kings County Record by phone from Tennessee.
Race administrators measure the exact time it should take a driver to reach certain points, a measurement that is not given to the drivers. The team, which is made up of a driver and a navigator, is given exact instructions detailing every move. Teams are scored at secret checkpoints.
